What do I win and how much does it cost?

Very few poker sites have freerolls that are absolutely free. Most have some sort of real money requirement either to enter or to collect the winnings. Online Poker sites do not offer free rolls to give away money. It is a marketing tool, used to:

  • Increase traffic at the site
  • Entice new players to play for real money.
  • Reward regular players for playing at the site.

Pokerroom.com h as 2 Poker freerolls per day for anyone, and 3 weekly freerolls for real money players. To enter the 3 weekly freerolls you must exchange Players' Points. (These points are accumulated by playing at the real money tables.) So, you do pay something for the entry. I found that to accumulate the 500 pts required to enter the $6000 took a very substantial amount time at the $1/$2 tables. Since the points do not accumulate week to week, to enter the Weekly Freeroll, every week, you must spend more than 20 hours playing each week. These tournaments have a front end requirement, to enter. The daily free rolls on the other hand are free to enter but to collect your prize you must accumulate the same players' points. You must collect 4 player's points for each $1 of winnings. To collect the top prize of $75 will cost you about 14 hours of real money play, before you get the money .

RedlightPoker , a play money poker site, uses freerolls, and prizes of staterooms to the World Poker Showdown cruise, as a marketing tool. The freerolls and the great prize cost you absolutely no money, but you do spend time at the site, exposed to their ads.

New Poker sites will also have many freerolls; on the "What Is the Game?" page we looked at DoylesRoom where every 3 rd game is a freeroll of sorts. They're not giving away a lot of money, but it is money and the normal tournament size is small. Since they have $.01/.02 games I guess a prize of 1.35 will go a long way. They require "Action" points to collect the prize but they are very easy to earn.

Okay so they're not really free, but some have some pretty good prizes for a small amount of risk. Let's look at some of the better prizes. Poker Cruises, $6000, Entry Tickets to real money tickets, World Poker Tour tickets, or even a chance to play with a real poker professional or better yet a super model.
